THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG:
In
June of 2004. I was ill in bed and about 1:30 pm I had a melody pop into my
brain along with a line about "the eagle cries"
that became the first line of the chorus. I
can't tell you what prompted the thought, it just came. I wasn't thinking
about Iraq or warfare, it just popped in my brain. But I wrote a first pass
at the chorus as I thought about the amazing bravery and service of the
soldiers I'd seen interviewed in Iraq. Then thoughts about the sorrows and sacrifice of
the current war
percolated in my brain throughout the next day. After coming home from work I
did a first draft of a
revised chorus and the verses that night. A few more re-writes yielded this.
I hope it's meaningful for you in some way and deepens your appreciation of
our amazing people in uniform.
A
mother sits in silent prayer
A
folded flag is lying there
And
she hopes that time will dim the taste of tears
Can
a heart-shaped medal ever say
What
he sacrificed that day
Of
fill the void in the coming years
And the eagle cries
Where a young man lies
Cause another son of freedom’s laid to rest
Though the cost is dear
To keep our freedoms here
Those who love this land all give their best
Another soldier dies
And the eagle cries
A husband stands in
a borrowed suit
He doesn’t hear
the guns salute
His
heart is filled
with grief he can’t ignore
But he doesn’t
think about it twice
That they paid
the highest price
He bravely thinks
of those who’ve gone before
And the eagle cries
Where a woman lies
Cause a daughter of our freedom’s laid to rest
Though the cost is dear
To keep our freedoms here
Those who love this land all give their best
Another soldier dies
And the eagle cries
We owe them so much for what they’ve done
Remember for ev’ry daughter and each son
That the eagle cries
Where the brave one lies
Cause a keeper of our freedom’s laid to rest
Though the cost is great
To keep our nation safe
Those who love this land will give their best
Knowing … when ev'ry soldier dies
That the eagle cries
