"Hillbilly Christmas"
(Song being re-recorded, no link to play)
THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG:
12-11-04,
11 PM. I was listening to music last week and decided to write my first Christmas song. My left brain
(the theological part) asked, “What themes should I draw on? The glory of the angelic announcement? The mystery of the Incarnation? The beauty of the humble manger story?”
About that time my right brain took over and this is what came out. You could say it’s about the importance of family in the holidays....
You could say that. I promise my next two songs will be serious. Honest.
You’ve
been away from Cooter’s Glen
Now
our girl’s coming back again
And we
want to make your visit special too
We
know that where you’re living now
The
culture ain’t the same somehow
The
things on CNN are probably true
So we
thought real hard and here’s what we will do
We're
have a hillbilly Christmas for you
There’s
a wreath of sausage on the door
We’ve
cleaned the bloodstains off the floor
And
cousins they will come from all around
We’ll
have deep-fried squirrel and possum stew
Collard
greens and chitlins too
And
grandpa’s special brew to wash it down
We
promise there'll be lots for you to do
Cause
we'll have a hillbilly Christmas for you
We
organized a tractor pull
Your
dance card is already full
We
don’t think there’s much that can go wrong
We
took some tires off of the shed
So
Santa Claus can land his sled
Cause
we know you’ve been real good all year long
When
you’re away there ain’t much that we do
So
we’ll have a hillbilly Christmas for you
(CHORUS)
If you
bring your special friend don’t be alarmed
We
promise that we’ll treat him real nice too
We’ll
win him over quickly with our country charm
He’ll
love our hillbilly Christmas for you
(CHORUS)
