"How Do You Pray"
                      (Play the Song)

THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG:
Two years ago, July 2003, I was at a conference and heard a colleague share about his wife’s prolonged illness and death. Toward the end of her life he was sitting with her one day, holding her hand, and gently kissed her and then asked her how he could pray for her that day. Her answer was, “Ask the Lord to take me away.” He then paused as he was speaking to us and said, “How do you pray at a time like that?” The song wrote itself.

Three years of getting worse and her life will soon unwind
By her bed I hold her hand and ask how I can pray
She’s so tired of fighting battles she’s got one thing on her mind
She said ask the Lord to take me away

How do you pray at a time such as this
Can’t bear the thought that she will go away
And I cherish every moment just to give a gentle kiss
Do I ask the Lord to take her or let her stay

I can’t imagine what it’s like to live without my wife
She tells me she will stay just as long as God gives grace
Her eyes say that she loves me even more than life
But she’s anxious now to see a better place

            (CHORUS)

I’m holding on so tightly to try to keep her here
Even though her journey probably is near

How do you pray at a time such as this
Can’t bear the thought that she will go away
And I cherish every moment just to give a gentle kiss
Do I ask the Lord to take her or let her stay

My heart is torn in pieces over this
Help me Lord, please tell me what to pray
