"The Way That You Love Me"
                      (Play the Song)

THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG:

This past summer ( 2004) my wife and I were driving home from a conference in NC. And, as sometimes happens,  a "line" popped in to my brain, “Why can’t I love you the way that you love me?" I thought it had promise so I wrote it down while driving - carefully  (but I think I scared my wife momentarily). A couple weeks later in August I was transferring that handwritten note into my song notebook and was reminded of a conversation with a friend a few days before. He had talked  about this dilemma with a girlfriend -  how she had deep feelings for him and was sure they were meant for each other. But he just didn't feel the same way. His friends thought they were a great match, she had so many good qualities and he was a little confused about how to handle it.  That prompted ideas to flow and I wrote down the rough chorus and verses that day.

Everything about you is so good for me
Everyone asks what I’m waiting for
Every day you tell me that we’re meant to be
But every night there’s doubts I can’t ignore

Why can’t I love you the way that you love me
Why can’t I feel the way you do
Why won’t this heart of mine act responsibly
Why can’t I break it off or fall for you
I feel so guilty letting you hang on
I need to face the facts and set you free
Pretending otherwise would be so very wrong
Oh why can’t I love like you love me

I’ve tried so hard to love like you with all my heart
But feelings never seemed to come to me
I’m tempted to give in to you and play the part
And hope that love will come eventually

             (CHORUS)

There’s a special person for each one sent from above
I seem to be the one that’s right for you
But God forgot to give me a complimentary love
So I don’t know exactly what to do

             (CHORUS)
